The STJD has handed Palmeiras forward Paulinho a one-match suspension for an obscene gesture towards Flamengo fans at the Maracanã, overturning an initial acquittal.

According to Coluna Do Fla, prosecutors appealed the earlier verdict to the tribunal’s final instance, which reclassified the act as provocation rather than a celebration.

The incident followed his goal in Palmeiras’ 3-0 victory, when Paulinho raised his middle fingers to the stands, angering home supporters.

The appeal argued that the forward clearly aimed the gesture at the Flamengo crowd.

As a result, Paulinho will serve an automatic ban and miss Palmeiras’ meeting with Coritiba when the Campeonato Brasileiro resumes.

The decision is final and the club have no remaining route of appeal.
