STJD charges Corinthians midfielder for red card vs RB Bragantino

Corinthians midfielder Charles was reported by the STJD (Superior Court of Sports Justice) regarding a sending-off in the defeat against RB Bragantino, away from home, by 2-1, at the Cícero de Souza Marques Stadium, during the 32nd round of the Brazilian Championship, in early November.

The midfielder was charged under article 254 of the CBJD (Brazilian Code of Sports Justice) and could face a suspension of up to six games for 'violent conduct' on the field. On that day, the number 35 slapped the face of an RB Bragantino player, and initially, Edna Alves Batista issued a yellow card.

Subsequently, without consulting the VAR, Edna opted to send off the player and did not indicate whether she had withdrawn the previous yellow card, as Charles already had a yellow card before the incident. The decision caused outrage in President Osmar Stabile and football executive Fabinho Soldado in interviews with the press after the match.

“After warning the player Charles with a yellow card for unsporting conduct, I was informed by assistant Fabrini Beviláqua that he slapped his opponent, Mr. Jhonatan, in the face. Given this information and as it was violent conduct and not unsporting behavior, I issued a direct red card, withdrawing the previously presented yellow card to the player,” the referee reported in a document sent to the CBF.

Since arriving at Corinthians in the transfer window of July last year, Charles has scored two goals and provided one assist in 59 games, with 32 wins, 19 draws, and eight losses – a 65% success rate. He was part of the team's surge in the last Brasileirão towards the Pré-Libertadores and was the state champion of 2025, against Palmeiras, in Itaquera.

The trial that could punish Charles will take place next Monday (1st), at 1 pm (Brasília time), in Rio de Janeiro, at the STJD headquarters.
