Gabriel Brazão has had his punishment cut to a formal warning after the STJD plenary heard Santos’ voluntary appeal on Wednesday.

The third Disciplinary Commission had initially imposed a four-match ban and a R$ 4,000 fine for remarks about referee Raphael Claus following the 1-1 draw with Palmeiras at Allianz Parque on 2 May in round 14, according to Diario Do Peixe.

That decision came on Friday 29. Santos obtained a suspensive effect, allowing the goalkeeper to play in the 3-1 win over Vitória at Vila Belmiro in round 18 on Saturday 30.

In the appeal, Santos asked for Article 243-F of the CBJD to be reclassified to Article 258. Prosecutor Gustavo Lisboa acted in the case and the rapporteurs were Marcos Choy, Rodrigo Aiache, Antonieta Pinto and Mariana Barreta, with Heitor Trados for the defence. The panel discussed whether the penalty for offending the referee’s honour was excessive, ruled out full acquittal, and by majority reduced it from four games to one, converted into a warning.

After the Palmeiras match, Brazão said he felt Claus had been overly strict, pointing to a 32nd-minute booking he believed he did not deserve. He said he warned that Flaco was inside the area before restarting play, was then cautioned, and added that at Palmeiras’ ground doubts tend to favour the hosts.

With the new outcome, he should not miss further matches, having served the automatic suspension and now received only a warning.
