Gambian international Adama Sidibeh could be on his way to League One, with the Hatters set to make an offer for a player who's impressed in Scotland.

Stockport County are set to make a big offer in order to attract a specific striker target to Edgeley Park this month.

In fourth place in the League One table and just four points off an automatic promotion place, this has been a strong first half of the season for Stockport County.

The ambitious Hatters landed in this division after winning the League Two title in 2024 and are aiming to go one better than the third place that they managed in their first season in this division since 2010.

It's looking very congested near the top of the table, and small margins could prove to be important throughout the second half of the season, meaning that the January transfer window could be crucial for all clubs seeking a place in the Championship for next season, and Stockport County have landed on a striker who they'll be hoping could fire them to promotion.

Stockport County making move for Adama Sidibeh as big contract offer planned

Alan Nixon revealed earlier in the week that Stockport had made an offer for St Johnstone striker Adama Sidibeh, and were rivalling League One rivals Stevenage and Northampton Town for the Gambian's services.

And in a fresh update, the Hatters are reportedly going to offer the 27-year-old a contract that is worth 'five times' more than the deal he's currently on at McDiarmid Park.

Sidibeh is out of contract at the Scottish Championship outfit in the summer, which means they are considering offers for the eight-cap, five-goal Gambia international before they lose him for absolutely nothing.

St Johnstone are currently in line for a quick return to the top-flight in Scotland. They are currently five points clear of second-placed Partick Thistle with a game in hand, and will not want to lose the striker, who's scored seven goals in all competitions so far in the 2025-26 season - but they may be pressured into a sale.

Sidibeh has only been a professional since February 2024, having moved up to Scotland from non-league outfit Warrington Rylands in the seventh tier of English football, but he could be set for a return to the North West of England at a much higher level before the February 2 transfer deadline.

Stockport County's goal-shy start to 2026 has demonstrated why they need greater fire-power up front

Adama Sidibeh has impressed in Scotland since signing for St Johnstone, and even though he's not been majorly prolific in the second tier this season, he's still a wanted man.

The Saints finished the 2024-25 season in bottom place in the SPFL, nine points adrift from safety, but with just two league defeats in their first 21 league games of the 2025-26 season.

And Stockport County could do with a little more consistency. They had an excellent start to this season and led the way in League One by the closing days of October. Since then, though their form has dipped.

They could only pick up a single point from three league matches in November, and have only won five times since then, although two straight wins in their last two games have steadied nerves a little following a start to 2026 which began with one point - and no goals - from their first two matches.

Whatever offer Stockport are preparing will be focused on wages rather than a transfer fee. As per Nixon's reporting, the player falls out of contract at McDiarmid Park at the end of this season and could leave the club as a free agent at that point, so any financial renumeration that the Scottish club receive is likely to be at the lower end of the scale.

Stockport's 3-2 win against Rotherham United may have quelled some concerns over their attacking options for the remainder of this season (although it's worth mentioning that two of their goals in this match were own goals), but prior to this they'd only scored one goal in three games in 2026, while it's also worth noting that they were eliminated from the FA Cup at the start of December on penalty kicks by League Two Cambridge United following a goalless draw.

Although untested at League One level in England, it's clear that Stockport County have seen something in Adama Sidibeh that they very much like.

This could be a move that turbo-charges the young striker's career. With Stockport very much in the promotion mix and a trip to top of the table Cardiff City to come before the end of January, Stockport will be hoping that they can get this deal over the line promptly.
