Yoane Wissa’s unexpected early departure from Brentford’s training ground, without participating in the session or engaging with teammates, has ignited serious questions about his future at the club. According to Sky Sports News, the striker spent just three hours at the training facility before leaving alone, a move described by sources as being underpinned by frustration and growing disillusionment.
The report, delivered by Dharmesh Sheth and Gail Davis, reveals Wissa is “angry and disappointed with the club’s approach over his future” following serious interest from Newcastle United. The Magpies recently had a £25 million bid rejected by Brentford, who are reportedly reluctant to part with yet another key attacker after Bryan Mbeumo’s move to Manchester United, which could rise to £71 million.
Brentford’s refusal to sell Wissa, despite mounting pressure and a concrete offer from Newcastle, reflects a club seeking to draw a line under a summer of upheaval. Losing both head coach Thomas Frank and club captain Christian Norgaard already signals a significant cultural reset at the club. Allowing Wissa to leave, particularly after sanctioning Mbeumo’s record exit, could destabilise the squad further.

Wissa’s frustration appears to be less about the money and more about opportunity. At 28, the DR Congo international is entering his prime years and is keen on a move that could elevate his career. Newcastle’s approach would potentially offer European football, a higher-profile platform and, crucially, an attacking system that fits his dynamic playing style.
While Newcastle have yet to return with a second formal bid, it is understood the club “still want to do a deal but are looking at other options”. That statement, quoted by Sky Sports News, suggests Wissa is among several targets being considered by Eddie Howe and the recruitment team at St James’ Park.
Financially, Newcastle may be wary of overpaying given the inflated prices seen this window, as evidenced by Mbeumo’s fee. However, Wissa’s Premier League experience, versatility and proven attacking output make him an attractive target in a summer where value is increasingly hard to find.
Brentford’s project under Thomas Frank had been admired across the league, with a data-driven, unified approach that got the best out of underrated talents. But with Frank gone and key figures now exiting, players like Wissa may be questioning what comes next.
If the Bees intend to resist Newcastle’s interest, they’ll need to manage Wissa’s discontent carefully. Training ground absences, even short ones, send signals in modern football. Clubs, fans and media take note. Whether intentional or not, Wissa’s early departure may have spoken louder than words.
“Wissa is hoping Newcastle have not given up on signing him.”
If Newcastle return with an improved offer in the closing stages of the window, Brentford will face a dilemma. Keep a disillusioned player, or cash in while value remains high?
From a Newcastle United fan’s perspective, the Wissa situation feels like a story with legs. Wissa is a proven Premier League talent, adaptable across the front three and blessed with pace, power and a nose for goals. For £25 million, he would have been smart business in today’s inflated market. That Brentford rejected that offer tells you either they value him higher, or they’re digging in to avoid a full-on summer exodus.
It’s encouraging that “Newcastle still want to do a deal” as per Sky Sports News. That suggests the club haven’t closed the door. With Champions League ambitions and the need for squad depth, especially given Callum Wilson’s injury history, Wissa makes perfect sense.
The early exit from training could be seen as Wissa’s way of nudging the door open. He clearly wants the move, and for Newcastle, that’s a good sign. Players who are motivated to join the project tend to perform better once they arrive. It feels like one more bid, perhaps closer to £30 million, could seal it.
From our end, the fans would back the move. He’s got Premier League experience, he’s hungry, and he’s shown flashes of real quality at Brentford. If Brentford do budge, and we land Wissa, it might be one of the smartest deals of our summer.
