Daily Record not too long ago suggested that Rangers could target a possible replacement for Alfredo Morelos by going after Mohamed Buya Turay. The report didn’t mention that Rangers were keeping track of the striker, but it was only just a suggestion from the news outlet.
However, now Turay’s agent was asked about a possible move to Rangers. The forward’s agent said, ”The interest in Turay has been big, and there has been a lot of speculation, but right now he belongs to Sint-Truiden, and whatever happens this summer we must talk about it then. It is difficult to comment on rumours and speculation. Right now, he belongs to Sint-Truiden, I do not want to comment on any rumours whatsoever. It is neither good for the club nor the player’s career. There have been many interested clubs, but we’ll see what happens in the summer.”
Turay’s agent was more or less coy on the question, but he did keep the option open for a move. Turay plies his trade in the Belgian top flight for Sint-Truiden. He is also a three-time Sierra Leone international. Turay’s claim to fame happened when he moved to Swedish top tier outfit Djurgardens IF on loan. The striker bagged 15 goals and five assists for them in 2018-19 season.
The 25-year-old became a cult legend at the Swedish club when he scored the equaliser in the last league game of the 2018-19 campaign against Norrköping. That draw was crucial as Djurgardens went on to win the league title by just one point as Malmo finished second.
Turay is yet to establish himself for Sint-Truiden though. It remains to be seen whether Rangers have any real interest in the striker as the Sierra Leone forward was named just as a suggestion by the Daily Record news outlet as a replacement for Morelos.
The 25-year-old’s standout assets are his pace and agility. He also has that aggressive approach which is often necessary to thrive in the Scottish Premiership. Turay generally works very hard for his side up front, and he is seen as a decent finisher.
However, he hasn’t been tested much at a tougher level, and there will be some risk involved in signing him. With the kind of transfer fee Rangers can get by selling Morelos, they should probably look to aim higher and sign a more established forward. Nevertheless, we see Turay as an exciting talent, and he can be worth considering but not as the main striker initially. Rangers will need to replace someone like Jermain Defoe as well, and Turay might be a decent backup option at first at Ibrox.
