Striking duo lose ground in second half, poor run continues at Corinthians

Corinthians took to the field last Saturday afternoon, October 25, to face Vitória at the Barradão Stadium, in a match valid for the 30th round of the Brazilian Championship and won by a score of 1 x 0. The Corinthians goal was scored by midfielder Charles. The victory placed the Alvinegro in tenth position with 39 points (10 wins, nine draws, and 11 losses – 32 goals scored).

Forward Ángel Romero was listed for the match but, since the arrival of Dorival Júnior – in late April – he has been losing space in the team, as the coach has been prioritizing giving playing time to young players from the youth categories like Dieguinho, Gui Negão, and Kayke in the offensive sector.

Ángel Romero's last goal wearing the Corinthians jersey marked six months this weekend. On April 24, the Paraguayan scored the goal that secured Corinthians' 1 x 0 victory against Racing-URU at the Neo Química Arena, in the third round of the Conmebol South American group stage. Since then, 30 games have passed, with Romero playing in 23 of them.

In the 2025 season, he has scored five goals (fourth in the squad in this regard) and provided three assists (fifth in the squad in this regard) in 49 matches. Of the total goals, four were in the Paulista Championship and one in the South American. The player has a contract until December 2025, and his future at the club is uncertain.

In two stints with Corinthians (2014-2018 and 2023-2025), he has scored 67 goals in 373 games (252 as a starter), with 174 wins, 98 draws, and 101 losses – a 55.5% success rate. Additionally, he has won five titles: Brazilian Championship (2015 and 2017) and three Paulistas (2017, 2018, and 2025).

For Corinthians, he is the second top scorer in the history of the Neo Química Arena – inaugurated in 2014 – with 43 goals scored in 176 games, surpassed only by Yuri Alberto, with 48. He is also the second top scorer for the Alvinegro in the 21st century, also surpassed by Yuri Alberto, who scored 73 times.

Meanwhile, forward Talles Magno, who also has a loan contract until the end of the season with New York City, USA, will complete a month without playing for Corinthians. The number 43 has been declining in performance in the second half of the year and, consequently, has also lost space with Dorival Júnior.

Talles Magno's last match for Corinthians was on September 28, in the 2 x 1 defeat – a comeback – to Flamengo at the Neo Química Arena, in a match valid for the 25th round of the Brasileirão. In October, there were four team matches (Internacional (A) – 1 x 1, Santos (A) – 3 x 1, Atlético-MG (H) – 1 x 0, and Vitória (A) – 0 x 1) and the 23-year-old player did not play in any of them.

Furthermore, Talles Magno has not scored since July 16, when the Alvinegro beat Ceará 1 x 0 at Arena Castelão, in the 14th round of the Brazilian Championship. Since then, the number 43 has been listed for 14 games – playing in 11 – but has not scored goals or provided assists.

In 2025, he has scored six goals (third in the squad in this regard) and provided four assists (fourth in the squad in this regard) in 45 games. Of the total goals, five were during the Paulista Championship, where the player experienced one of his best moments since joining the club.

Since joining Corinthians in last year's transfer window, he has played 64 games (28 as a starter), with 31 wins, 17 draws, and 16 losses, scoring nine goals and providing seven assists. Talles was important in Alvinegro's surge in the last edition of the Brasileirão and played a key role in winning the 2025 Paulista Championship, which ended with a victory over Palmeiras in the final in Itaquera.
