Inter joined Roma in showing concrete interest in Stuttgart winger Jamie Leweling, but the German international stayed in the Bundesliga after Stuttgart made clear they wanted at least €40 million and had little intention of selling.

According to Marco Conterio for Tuttomercatoweb, the Nerazzurri carried out a genuine sondaggio on the 25-year-old, moving beyond mere background checks to see whether there was real margin to bring in a player with a different profile to those already in Christian Chivu’s squad.

Why Both Italian Clubs Circled Leweling

Leweling’s appeal lies in his versatility. He can play as a right winger, left winger, trequartista or supporting forward, and his ambidexterity makes him the kind of asset a coach can plug into multiple positions.

Inter reportedly viewed him partly as an alternative cursore on the right flank and partly as a way of giving Chivu characteristics currently missing from the squad, a similar logic that has driven the club’s other wide-attacker enquiries this window, as seen in the Nico Gonzalez situation. Roma’s interest, meanwhile, was tied to their late-window search for a trequartista with exactly Leweling’s attributes – a piece they ultimately failed to land, much as they did in pursuing Luis Henrique.

Stuttgart’s €40 Million Wall

The asking price never moved. Stuttgart wanted at least €40 million for the Nuremberg-born winger, and that valuation, combined with the club’s clear preference to retain him, meant the affair never truly took off on either side of the Roma-Inter rivalry – echoing how Inter found themselves squeezed out of the market for Anan Khalaili earlier this year.

Leweling has spent his entire career in Germany, moving through Nuremberg, Greuther Furth and Union Berlin before Stuttgart signed him permanently for €6 million in the summer of 2024. He has earned six caps for the Germany national team, and for now, both Roma and Inter will have to look elsewhere.
