San Mamés delivered a muted tribute to Spain's World Cup players before Athletic's meeting with Sevilla, with Unai Simón starting and Aymeric Laporte and Nico Williams on the bench.

The World Cup trophy was set on the turf at La Catedral as the club marked Spain's feat in the USA, and both teams formed a guard of honour. As reported by as.com, Spain coach Luis de la Fuente, a former Athletic player and Sevilla left-back, watched from the box.

From the Grada de Animación came whistles and brief chants of "español el que no bote, eh", along with other songs criticising the ceremony.

Elsewhere in the ground, supporters stayed in their seats and applauded respectfully.

Alongside the World Cup focus, Athletic also honoured the recently deceased Carmelo Cedrún, a goalkeeping great and predecessor to Iribar. A minute's silence was observed with El Txopo, Simón and Padilla in the centre circle, and Cedrún's shirt displayed.
