WSL Football has rebranded the League Cup as the Subway Players Cup from the 2026/27 season, extending a multi-year partnership with Subway that places player welfare at the centre of a significantly revised format. That matters because it represents the most substantial structural overhaul of the competition in years, with changes shaped directly by feedback from clubs, players, and fans.
The Subway Players Cup will feature 23 clubs across two stages: a League Phase and a Knockout Phase. The League Phase adopts a Swiss-style structure with fixtures drawn by region, ensuring every club plays at least six matches, three home, three away, before the knockout rounds begin.
Results from all regional matches feed into a single combined league table, with the top eight clubs advancing to the quarter-finals in January 2027. The semi-finals follow in February, with the final scheduled at a neutral venue across the weekend of 13-14 March 2027.
One notable structural change is the points system. Matches level after 90 minutes go directly to a penalty shootout, no extra time, with the shootout winner taking two points and the losing side earning one. That keeps player minutes manageable while preserving genuine competitive stakes across every fixture.
UEFA Women’s Champions League clubs will no longer compete in the tournament. According to Her Football Hub, WSL Football made the change explicitly to ease fixture congestion and better manage workloads during an increasingly demanding calendar, a decision that says plenty about how seriously the league is now taking player welfare as a governance principle rather than a talking point.

WSL Football Chief Revenue Officer Zarah Al-Kudcy said the organisation wanted to create a platform for meaningful playing minutes for young and fringe players while addressing differences in playing opportunities across the leagues without compromising player welfare principles, expressing confidence that the Players Cup can become an exciting new domestic competition in England.
Subway EMEA Senior Marketing Director Kirstey Elston said the company is proud to continue supporting the growth of women’s football. “We’re excited to renew our partnership with WSL Football as they continue to bring something fresh to the women’s game. The Players Cup is a fantastic opportunity to support a sport that continues to grow and inspire communities across the country.”
Subway’s renewed involvement follows two seasons as title sponsor of the League Cup, during which the company also supported nutrition initiatives for female athletes developed with The Well HQ. The relaunch sits alongside a broader period of commercial momentum for the league, as seen in She Kicks’ coverage of the WSL’s Airbnb partnership, signalling that top-tier brands are deepening their commitment to the women’s game rather than dipping in and out.
Alongside the format changes, WSL Football has unveiled new visual branding for the cup, inspired by the moment of lifting a trophy, with a colour palette designed to blend the identities of the WSL and WSL 2, reflecting that clubs from both divisions will compete. Fine in principle, but the harder question is whether the Swiss-style league phase genuinely delivers the rotation and development minutes it promises once the season is underway and league positions start to bite.

The League Phase fixtures will be drawn on Thursday 6 August, the next concrete marker for the competition. After that, the focus shifts to whether 23 clubs, freed from the shadow of the European clubs and armed with a cleaner format, can make the Subway Players Cup feel like a competition worth winning. The structure is there. Now it needs the moments.
