FC Bayern can breathe a sigh of relief in the dispute over Luis Diaz’s suspension, as the Colombian’s red card has been reduced

As UEFA has now officially confirmed, the penalty has been reduced from the original three Champions League games to two games following an appeal by the club. The record champions have thus achieved an important success in the battle for the attacking player, who had been suspended for months following his red card in the clash with Paris

Diaz was sent off in the Champions League match against PSG, whereupon UEFA initially handed down a three-match ban. A decision that caused considerable anger in Munich. The club immediately lodged an appeal – but the association did not respond for weeks. For over four weeks, the club waited in vain for a response, while coach Vincent Kompany and sporting director Christoph Freund had initially assumed a much more lenient punishment

Kompany had explained at the time: „My information is: one match. I would be really disappointed if my information is not correct.“ Freund was also surprised: „My information is also: one match. But that is still being communicated.“ When UEFA finally imposed the penalty of three matches, the frustration at Säbener Straße grew noticeably

The delay in the entire process was particularly irritating. The original verdict took two and a half weeks to be issued. FC Bayern then received the written justification only after a delay – and was only able to officially submit the appeal after receiving it. After that, nothing happened again for a long time

Now UEFA has finally taken a stand – and at least partially upheld the appeal. The ban has been reduced to two matches, which brings Diaz back earlier than feared. For FC Bayern, this means a little more planning security, as the attacking player will no longer be out for the entire league phase of the premier class

Originally, Diaz was at risk of being ruled out for the game against Arsenal as well as Sporting Lisbon and Union Saint-Gilloise. Now, Diaz will only be unavailable for the home game against Sporting next Tuesday. He can now play again in the new year against Union St. Gilloise.
