Sunderland are among several Premier League clubs weighing up a summer move for Manchester City’s Rico Lewis, with Newcastle United seen as leading rivals, TeamTalk reports. It adds that Everton, Fulham, Crystal Palace, Brentford and Brighton also admire the 21-year-old, and that City would not block an exit if he seeks regular football.

The Black Cats have already shifted towards summer planning after securing their top-flight status with recent wins over Leeds United and Newcastle United.

Lewis, a two-time Premier League winner, came through City’s academy and debuted as a substitute against Bournemouth in August 2022. Three months later he made his first start and scored in a Champions League win over Sevilla.

The 13-times capped England international progressed under Gareth Southgate and signed a new contract last summer, setting his sights on becoming a key figure at City.

Game-time has been limited this season, with 11 of his 21 appearances coming as starts, and he has been an unused substitute on 21 occasions. That situation has prompted suggestions he could move to secure regular minutes.

Interest is said to come from seven top-flight sides, with Wear and Tyne rivals monitoring developments closely as Lewis assesses his options ahead of the window.
