Sunderland opened their Europa League campaign with a 1-0 win over AZ Alkmaar on Wednesday evening, a result that brings a six-figure windfall. According to Sunderland Echo, recent seasons have paid £389,000 per league phase win and £130,000 per draw.
After more than half a century away from continental competition, the Black Cats marked their return through a second-half Enzo Le Fée penalty.
England top UEFA’s coefficient, so English clubs receive the largest share of TV revenue, and estimates suggest this could be worth a few million pounds to Sunderland this season.
Progress beyond the league phase has recently brought teams £3.7 million for reaching the knockout stages. A deep run could add around £20 million in prize money, and it is understood Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa each earned over £40 million for lifting the trophy in the past two campaigns.
Sunderland visit Torreense on October 15th, then travel to Lech Poznan seven days later. Their next home tie is against Dinamo Zagreb on November 5th.
