Sunderland have added former Brentford and Spurs analyst Joe Newton to Régis Le Bris's backroom staff as first-team analyst ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

“I am naturally excited to get back into it,” he told Training Ground Guru.

“The job advert came up towards the end of last season and I applied. The club had a great season last year and hopefully that continues. It has a great community feel and good values and that is one of the things that attracted me to the role.”

Newton worked with Thomas Frank at Brentford for a number of years before joining him in moving last summer, and he left Spurs earlier this year.

His primary focus will be opposition analysis as Sunderland prepare for a significantly expanded schedule after qualifying for the Europa League group stages. Over the last year, Florent Ghisolfi has been strengthening football departments following the club’s promotion to the Premier League.
