Sunderland still have something tangible on the line when they host Chelsea next Sunday. Their memorable Premier League return ends at the Stadium of Light.
The Black Cats have banked standout wins over Chelsea and Bournemouth, completed a historic league double against Newcastle United and denied Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United and Aston Villa maximum points on Wearside. Sunderland Echo notes that victory on the final day could push them up the table and increase merit payments.
Based on current standings, the Premier League’s per-place merit figures show ninth-placed Chelsea at £31.9m, 10th Everton £29.1m, 11th Fulham £26.5m, 12th Sunderland £23.8m and 13th Newcastle United £21.2m. Climbing one position would bring a higher payout.
Each club also receives equal-share broadcast income. Last season every side banked £29.8m from the domestic deal and £59.2m from the international agreement.
With the summer transfer window approaching, any extra cash would bolster Sunderland’s coffers. European qualification remains a long shot, but there is still plenty to play for against Chelsea.
