According to Sunderland Echo, Sunderland could offload fringe players this summer to free wages, revive careers and give Florent Ghisolfi more scope to reshape the squad.

A rapid rise and a return to Europe, with at least eight Europa League fixtures, sharpen the need for clarity. Moving on those unlikely to feature could release budget and valuable squad space for the new sporting hierarchy.

Abdoullah Ba has barely featured for over two years, so a permanent move looks best for all. Milan Aleksic likewise needs a stable home, with Sunderland’s level making a pathway difficult. A clean break may suit.

Leo Hjelde, 22, was on loan last season and looks unlikely to play Premier League football. Timothée Pembélé’s stop-start spell points to a fresh start, and taking his wages off the books is a must for Ghisolfi.

Arthur Masuaku was loaned after six months and appears outside current plans, while left-back is expected to be reshaped despite Dennis Cirkin confirming he is leaving. Alan Browne did well at Middlesbrough, but competition from Granit Xhaka, Noah Sadiki, Habib Diarra and Enzo Le Fée limits his prospects.

Nazariy Rusyn never settled despite flashes, and with Brian Brobbey leading the line, he needs a permanent home. Jenson Seelt has talent but injuries cloud reliability, so any decision could hinge on medical confidence and market interest. Luis Hemir Semedo has not established himself, and with Brobbey ahead, another loan would only delay the inevitable, so a permanent move would allow him to reset.
