Sunderland are weighing changes to Régis Le Bris’ staff and are in talks to add former Middlesbrough and Hartlepool United goalkeeper Pete Jameson to the academy.
According to Sunderland Echo, the 33-year-old Gateshead player-coach is discussing a move to the Academy of Light, with no agreement yet.
If completed, Jameson would focus on U18 and U21 keepers, and his arrival could shape the structure above academy level.
Jonny Maddison could step up to the first team under lead goalkeeping coach Neil Cutler, having been involved before the Manchester United match.
Sporting director Florent Ghisolfi is understood to want extra depth in the goalkeeping department. Alessandro Barcherini now holds a broader assistant coach role.
Born in Sunderland, Jameson came through Middlesbrough and made more than 130 Darlington appearances, later playing for Blyth Spartans, York, Harrogate and Hartlepool.
He featured 21 times on loan for Hartlepool in 2023-24 before leaving Harrogate, returned to Darlington in 2024, and became Gateshead player-coach in July 2025, with later returns to Darlington.
In the academy, Matty Young is close to a new deal after Salford City, Ben Metcalf’s option is taken, Joe Cowan and Isaac Allan remain contracted, while Dan Cameron and Adam Richardson are set to leave.
No appointment is complete, but talks with Jameson indicate a push to strengthen support for young keepers as Sunderland adjust to Premier League life.
The wider set-up is under review after assistant head coach Luciano Vulcano left in February. Isidre Ramón Madir, Cutler and Michael Proctor continue in place.
