Sunderland are reportedly weighing a move for Ipswich Town goalkeeper Alex Palmer as Anthony Patterson edges towards a switch to Wrexham.

According to the Daily Mail, the 30-year-old has emerged as an option for Régis Le Bris’ side, with Patterson due a Wrexham medical after an agreement worth £8 million plus add-ons. Palmer is also on Wrexham’s list if their Patterson bid collapses.

Palmer joined Ipswich from West Bromwich Albion on deadline day in February 2025, signing a three-and-a-half-year deal that runs to summer 2028, leaving Town in a strong negotiating position if Sunderland firm up interest.

An academy graduate at West Brom after arriving aged 14, he made 104 senior appearances for the Baggies. Loans followed at Kidderminster Harriers, Oldham Athletic, Notts County, Plymouth Argyle and Lincoln City, plus a short emergency stint at Luton Town.

His Plymouth spell brought promotion from League Two, and he later became West Brom’s first-choice keeper. He shared the Championship Golden Glove in 2023-24 with 18 clean sheets.

Palmer has since played in the Premier League for Ipswich, having been part of the squad that secured promotion back to the top flight last season. Sunderland’s interest comes as Patterson’s long association with his boyhood club nears its end, potentially leaving the Black Cats assessing options behind Robin Roefs.
