Sunderland have dismissed claims they opened talks over a £40m deal for AS Monaco striker Folarin Balogun.
According to Sunderland Echo, reports that surfaced on Monday suggesting negotiations had begun are wide of the mark, with club sources insisting no discussions have taken place and no talks are under way.
The Black Cats continue to assess additions as Régis Le Bris and the recruitment team shape the squad for the new campaign.
The touted £40m fee would rank among the biggest in Sunderland’s history, which explains the attention among supporters.
As things stand there is no substance to suggestions of a £40m agreement. The club are expected to stay active before the deadline, particularly with the added demands of European football.
Sunderland have shown a willingness to invest when the right player and deal align, but they have distanced themselves from the latest Balogun speculation. The forward has been mentioned in wider reports on potential attacking targets.
