Sunderland have activated Simon Moore’s one-year option, keeping the 36-year-old goalkeeper at the club after strong dressing-room praise.

Sunderland Echo understands the clause, which adds 12 months to a deal previously due to end on 30 June 2026, was triggered some time ago. Moore is set to stay on Wearside for at least another year.

Moore joined in June 2024 on a two-year contract while Sunderland were in the Championship. He made his first league appearance against Oxford United in October 2024 when Anthony Patterson was injured. He then played four league matches and two cup ties, and has not featured this season.

Within a youthful goalkeeping group featuring 23-year-old Robin Roefs and 22-year-old Melker Ellborg, Moore’s influence has been repeatedly stressed. He is working towards his coaching badges, supported at the Academy of Light.

Roefs has credited Moore with helping him settle after his move from the Netherlands. Luke O’Nien has described him as the unsung hero of Sunderland’s recent success, citing his example while returning from a shoulder injury sustained in the play-off final win over Sheffield United. O’Nien even keeps a Moore shirt in his locker to reinforce those standards.
