A Sunderland supporter has arrived in Boston with his family for England’s World Cup meeting with Ghana, but says the hunt for tickets has been punishingly expensive.
England lead Group L ahead of Ghana on goal difference after a 4-2 win over Croatia in Dallas. According to Sunderland Echo, 49-year-old Gareth Brazier plans to attend Tuesday’s game and the final group fixture against Panama, yet he has found prices excessive and said he would not have travelled on principle had the flights not already been booked.
He had expected cheaper seats because of his high caps in the England away group, but said the market was chaotic and overpriced.
Brazier also joked that locals had already told them England fans were better looking and had better personal hygiene than the Scottish visitors, who left after their opening two matches.
Many England fans were arriving without tickets and hoping costs fall before kick-off. Karl Wall, 54, from Whitby, said he still had none after abandoning a purchase at checkout due to the price, while his travelling companion, Lee Finegan, 53, from Middlesbrough, put some seats at about £1,400.
Wall added that they would try for cheaper options and, failing that, head to the fan park. Brazier said the trip had taken long saving and, with his wife and three children also attending, it was far from cheap.
