Sunderland have revised their safe-standing rollout in block U18, prompting thanks from a 70-year-old supporter who feared having to stand through matches. The club confirmed the change on 3 June.
A club spokesperson stated that, following the installation of 2,000 rail seats in the Roker End in 2024/25, plans to extend rail seating to blocks U40, U15, U16, U17 and U18 for 2026/27 have been revised after supporter feedback. Rail seating in U18 will now be limited to the top seven rows, the lower rows will remain seated, and the area will be monitored during the season.
Targeted sections were identified as places where many regularly stand, and season-ticket holders were emailed on Monday May 25 about the expansion. While rail seats permit sitting, views could be obstructed by standing fans.
John Marshall, 70, from Durham City, has held a season ticket for 40 years in block U18. He has had a hip replacement and a 76-year-old friend has had both hips replaced, so long periods on their feet would be difficult. U17 generally stands while most in U18 prefer to sit.
Marshall welcomed the revised approach and thanked Sunderland for listening to older supporters and those with mobility issues. Fanzine A Love Supreme representative Paul Dobson also backed the increase in safe standing and the club’s sensitivity to fans who cannot stand.
