Sunderland supporters have named their dream all-time side for Europe. The UEFA Europa League draw will be held on Friday, August 28, and it will set out the club’s eight league-phase opponents.

According to Sunderland Echo, followers of the nostalgia Facebook page Wearside Echoes were asked to choose a Europa League squad from any era, and these names drew the most nominations.

In goal, Jimmy Montgomery topped the voting, with many recalling his famous double save in the 1973 FA Cup final. Robin Roefs and Shay Given also received backing.

Colin Todd claimed a defensive berth after 173 Sunderland appearances, alongside 293 for Derby and 27 for England.

Charlie Hurley, The King, remained a popular choice, his 402 Sunderland appearances between 1957 and 1969 still resonating with fans.

Dave Watson, a commanding centre half and former centre forward, was also selected, remembered for a bullet header against Luton in the 1973 FA Cup run. He played 177 times for Sunderland and 65 for England.
