Sunderland academy goalkeeper Isaac Allan has been praised for a key role in Hebburn Town’s 2-1 win over Hednesford during their first National League North season. According to Sunderland Echo, the loanee stood out as the Hornets steadied themselves after a bruising week.

Allan returned last month after a successful stint in the second half of last season, when he helped Daniel Moore’s side see off Hednesford Town and FC United of Manchester to win the Northern Premier League for the first time.

Hebburn had lost only one of their first six league games before a 5-1 defeat at Radcliffe in midweek. They responded on Saturday with a deserved 2-1 victory on a blustery afternoon at the Trustmark Group Stadium, Allan and his back line delivering a composed display.

Moore said the reshaped defence, with skipper Aidan Heywood withdrawn and Joe Oliver drafted in, coped well despite recent rotation and simply got the job done. He added that Allan’s presence in the box calmed the team at key moments.

The manager felt the penalty award was not a penalty, yet Allan saved it and, in his view, it did not affect the outcome. Moore said Tuesday’s display was disjointed but believed his side were back to their best on Saturday, compact and hard to break down.
