Sunderland loanee Lutsharel Geertruida has posted a brief Instagram message after a January move to Liverpool fell through. The 24-year-old shared a photo of his back tattoo with the caption: “Can’t complain. Thank God.”

Sunderland Echo reports that Liverpool explored a deal during the window amid defensive injuries, and that head coach Regis Le Bris said Geertruida accepted the deadline decision and is ready to play.

Geertruida previously worked with Arne Slot at Feyenoord, and Liverpool sought to reunite the pair last month, but the defender was not available.

With the Dutchman on loan at Sunderland from RB Leipzig, any agreement required the Black Cats’ approval. With little time to source a replacement, the decision was taken for him to remain on Wearside.

Team-mate Romaine Mundle replied to the Instagram post with Sunderland’s promotion mantra: “’Til the end.”
