Sunderland ‘make enquiry’ for Óscar Mingueza as defender nears free agency | OneFootball

According to reports, Sunderland have made an early enquiry for Spanish defender Óscar Mingueza, with Atalanta and Como also making initial approaches.

Mingueza is set to leave Celta Vigo as a free agent this summer.

The 27-year-old came through Barcelona's academy and has four caps for Spain. He has been a regular since joining Celta in 2022. Primarily a right back, he can also cover left back and centre back.

Sunderland are seeking defensive reinforcements after Dennis Cirkin's exit and with Lutsharel Geertruida's future unresolved. The club did not trigger their option to buy Geertruida, talks continue over a permanent deal and rival interest means a return next season is uncertain.

Mingueza made 34 La Liga appearances last season, plus 11 in the Europa League. He has previously been linked with Aston Villa and Newcastle United.
