Sunderland’s comeback win over Crystal Palace matched Ipswich Town’s longest unbeaten home run by a newly promoted Premier League side, extending the Stadium of Light sequence to 11 games. Ipswich first set the mark in 1992-93.
According to Sunderland Echo, the build-up was dominated by confirmation that head coach Oliver Glasner would leave at the end of the season. Palace travelled without Marc Guéhi after his move to Manchester City, while Sunderland started the night 10th and the visitors 13th.
Regulars at the Stadium of Light also marked the passing of Andy Edmonds, a long-serving press lounge steward who had worked at the club since the 1980s and featured in Sunderland ’Til I Die. A book of condolence was opened in his honour.
On the pitch, Palace led in the first half. Enzo Le Fée levelled swiftly, and after the break Sunderland controlled possession and territory. Brian Brobbey then rifled in his fourth league goal to complete the turnaround.
Palace were restricted to counters as the hosts created further chances without adding a third. The result added further substance to Sunderland’s top-flight return.
Off the field, Sunderland concluded Blondy Nna Noukeu’s permanent move to Ligue 2 side US Boulogne for an undisclosed fee after 18 months on Wearside. He did not make a senior appearance but worked alongside the senior goalkeepers. Sporting director Kristjaan Speakman said the transfer should provide regular professional minutes and offered his best wishes.
