Sunderland moments missed: Timur Tutierov twist, Chris Rigg clue and cult hero serenaded | OneFootball

Sunderland’s pre-season opener at York City offered more than fitness, with selection clues, a sharp Timur Tutierov and a cult favourite serenaded.

As reported by Sunderland Echo, the friendly centred on minutes for seniors and academy prospects, yet it still produced talking points.

Former defender Zak Johnson started for York after leaving the Academy of Light permanently following last season’s loan. He helped win promotion before making the move and was applauded by the away end.

Tutierov was picked in the first-half XI, despite club sources previously indicating he was expected to leave this summer in a deal similar to Johnson and Harrison Jones. His inclusion may cast doubt on that, though one friendly proves little.

He then scored and set up another in an eye-catching display, making an impression on Le Bris and his staff.

Romaine Mundle and Dan Ballard were absent as they continue injury recoveries, with caution sensible at this stage. Anthony Patterson did not feature and his future remains uncertain.

Melker Ellborg, rarely used due to Robin Roefs’ consistency, has nonetheless earned cult-hero status among some supporters. His name rang out through the first half, echoing last season’s 2-1 win at Newcastle at St James’ Park.

Chris Rigg started in central midfield, while Jocelin Ta Bi played on the right. It also raised whether Rigg could ultimately settle centrally.

A welcome sight too, Aji Alese played the second half at left-back as he begins rebuilding fitness after a long lay-off.
