Sunderland leaned into their latest Tyne-Wear derby triumph, needling Newcastle United and even Sam Fender with viral social-media posts. According to Sunderland Echo, the club moved swiftly to amplify the moment online.
Newcastle had the ideal start at St James’s Park when Anthony Gordon struck early. Sunderland rallied after the break, Brian Brobbey netted the winner and the visitors claimed all three points. The result completed a comeback and extended Newcastle’s winless Premier League run in this fixture to 11 matches.
Within minutes of full-time, Sunderland updated their cover image across platforms to a shot of the travelling support celebrating inside St James’s Park. The picture featured a banner referencing Eddie Howe’s black-and-white army, a pointed nod at their hosts that drew plenty of reaction.
They also posted the clip of Brobbey’s decisive goal set to Sam Fender’s track Rein Me In, featuring Olivia Dean, a choice notable given the singer’s Newcastle allegiance. The video quickly gathered traction.
On Tyneside the mood has darkened, with scrutiny on Eddie Howe after consecutive derby defeats and debate among supporters over the direction of the team. The shift follows a far brighter spell when Howe was widely praised after delivering Carabao Cup success.
Howe said he remains fully committed despite the setback and his own disappointment with recent performances. He described the Barcelona game as very tough and this loss as tougher, stressed he would shield his players and accepted that the coming days would be painful.
