Sunderland have issued an update to supporters after 65 tickets for the recent Tyne-Wear derby were cancelled and returned to sale. The cancellations had prompted concerns from several fan groups.

The club said in a statement that an exceptional case of ticket misuse involved multiple unauthorised uses of supporter accounts, in some instances without the account holders’ knowledge. It added that this accounted for more than 50% of some group purchases, that those involved had acknowledged the misuse, and that appropriate action had been taken.

Sunderland acknowledged some fans were affected through no fault of their own and expressed regret for the disappointment caused. It will continue working with the ticketing supporter sub group to review and improve processes so away tickets are allocated fairly and only to genuine supporters.

Separately, the Red and White Army thanked Chief Business Officer David Bruce following confirmation on Monday that he will leave the club this summer. The group credited his tenure with improvements to matchday experience, retail and a stronger sense of identity at the SoL, and wished him well.

Non-executive director Tom Burwell has taken over as interim CEO. A permanent appointment is expected to be made this summer.
