Sunderland’s owners have underlined their commitment amid fresh takeover talk, while key calls on Lutsharel Geertruida and the academy are taking shape.
Head coach Régis Le Bris said on Thursday it was still too early to decide on Geertruida’s future. Sky Sports Germany then reported Sunderland will not take up their option to sign the Netherlands international, putting the clause at €23m, around £20m, and adding he will not remain beyond the season.
Footbiz claimed potential investors had been told of Sunderland’s availability, with US investment bank Moelis retained, a firm that worked on the Chelsea sale process. The ownership did not address every element, but insist they are fully committed and are already planning for next season after Premier League safety.
Kyril Louis-Dreyfus holds a 64 per cent stake, with Juan Sartori owning 36 per cent. The pair control the club through Mercator, and Sunderland also sits within their Bia Sports Group portfolio.
Geertruida joined on loan last summer with an option to buy. He has made 27 appearances across all competitions and has contributed, but he has not secured a regular starting spot under Le Bris.
In the academy, Sunderland remain in talks with Jack Whittaker over a new deal. Dan Cameron and Jake Waters are expected to depart when their contracts expire in June, leaving as free transfers.
Hebburn Town want Cameron and Waters after winning promotion to National League North. Both have previously had loans with the Hornets, who are also keen on a possible loan return for goalkeeper Isaac Allan.
