Sunderland have accelerated their move for Toulouse left back Dayann Mathalie, with L’Equipe reporting the Ligue 1 club rejected an opening offer of about £17 million.

RMC reported on Monday evening that Sunderland had an agreement in place with the 20-year-old on a five-year contract, though a deal between the clubs has not been reached.

Toulouse are understood to be holding out for a premium to part with a prized asset after his breakout season, in which he made 31 competitive appearances.

The French side have already sold striker Emersonn to Ipswich Town for around £24 million plus £3.5 million in add-ons, and are believed to be seeking an improvement on that figure for Mathalie.

Ipswich will face Sunderland on the opening day of the Premier League season at Portman Road.

Left back is a priority for Sunderland after Dennis Cirkin departed earlier this summer, leaving Reinildo as the only senior option in Régis Le Bris’s squad.

The Black Cats also want another right winger following Bertrand Traoré’s exit, while a left-sided centre back and extra attacking depth are being considered as they target quality over quantity.
