Sunderland are set to publish their official retained list in the coming week, but some expected departures may still be named as retained.
According to Sunderland Echo, Harrison Jones, Timur Tutierov and Zak Johnson are likely to feature on the list, which may prompt confusion but does not confirm long-term plans.
The approach is understood to protect the club’s position, with potential small fees or sell-on clauses attached to any exits. Departures are not necessarily immediate, though they are still anticipated.
Jones has interest from League One, League Two and Scotland ahead of a possible move. The local midfielder is well regarded at the Academy of Light and has been around the senior set-up during a successful period, but promotion to the Premier League has altered pathways for several young players.
Tutierov and Johnson are also expected to leave as Sunderland reshape elements of the academy and development group this summer.
Being on a retained list does not always mean a player will stay for the season ahead. It can preserve value and allow the club and player to manage an exit that suits both.
