Sunderland snatched a late win at Newcastle United to continue their impressive Tyne-Wear Derby record.
Brian Brobbey’s 90th-minute goal was the difference between the North East rivals at St James’ Park, as the Dutchman turned in at the second attempt.
Sunderland came from behind to take the points in a game of two halves, with Newcastle in control across the opening 45 minutes. Anthony Gordon’s goal had put the Magpies in front, as the England winger made it three consecutive Premier League games on the scoresheet.
The momentum, however, changed after half-time. Perhaps feeling the physical impact of a midweek Champions League exit at Barcelona, Newcastle tired as Sunderland grew into the game.
The Black Cats levelled just before the hour, when Chemsdine Talbi reacted quickest to a loose ball. Newcastle ‘keeper Aaron Ramsdale had failed to get enough clearance on a corner kick and Sunderland were rewarded for keeping the ball alive.
Newcastle thought they had gone back in front when substitute Malick Thiaw headed in from a corner, but the goal was ruled out by referee Anthony Taylor. Jacob Murphy was adjudged to have impacted Sunderland goalkeeper Melker Ellborg from an offside position.
As the game ticked towards full-time, Sunderland looked the likelier winner and found a breakthrough. Enzo Le Fee’s cut-back from the byline found Brobbey who, after seeing an initial effort saved, tucked home the winner.
The goal extended Sunderland’s fine record in this fixture to 11 unbeaten in the Premier League. Newcastle’s wait for a Tyne-Wear Derby win in the league extends to 16 years.
