Sunderland continued their fine start to the season with a 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest, leaving Ange Postecoglou still searching for his first home victory as head coach.

Omar Alderete’s first-half header proved decisive, securing the promoted side’s third win of the campaign and moving them up to third in the table.

The breakthrough came in the first half after Nicolas Dominguez was penalised for simulation following a challenge with Trai Hume, allowing Sunderland a free-kick.

Granit Xhaka delivered the ball into the box, and Alderete was perfectly positioned to nod past the Forest keeper.

Forest had opportunities to respond before the interval. Dan Ndoye’s effort was deflected narrowly wide, while Chris Wood glanced a header over the bar, leaving the hosts frustrated going into the break.

The second half saw Forest push hard for an equaliser. Elliot Anderson bent a shot just over the crossbar, and Omari Hutchinson, Igor Jesus, and Anderson again were denied by Sunderland keeper Robin Roefs, who continued his excellent form this season. Despite sustained pressure, Forest couldn’t find a way through.

The Black Cats held on to claim a deserved three points, maintaining their strong early-season form, while Forest remain 16th after securing only one win from their opening six Premier League games.
