Sunderland’s Tyne-Wear derby win has sharpened their push for Europe and could deliver a significant financial uplift during the run-in.
At St James' Park on Sunday, Brian Brobbey struck in the final minute to beat Newcastle United. The result completed a league double over the Magpies and extended their unbeaten league derby sequence to 11 games, leaving them 11th heading into the final international break.
Sunderland Echo notes that Premier League income includes an equal share and merit payments that rise with every finishing place. For example, last season champions Liverpool earned an extra £32.3m while bottom Southampton received £1.6m. Using 2024/25 rates, 1st was worth £53.1m, 11th £26.5m and 12th £23.8m.
A new broadcast deal will take live Premier League matches past 260 by 2025/26. Sky Sports and TNT Sports pay home clubs a facility fee per selection, averaging about £830,000. So far this season Manchester United have had 26 live games, worth around £21.8m, while Sunderland’s 17 are worth about £14.6m.
With each rung on the table carrying extra merit cash and further TV picks possible, Sunderland could bank a notable boost if they sustain form. European qualification would be only their second and the first since entering the Cup Winners Cup after their FA Cup final win over Leeds United in 1973.
