Sunderland held Manchester United to a 0-0 at the Stadium of Light, and Opta’s latest model tips them to finish 12th.

Regis Le Bris’ side went in seeking a first win in just under a month after defeats to Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa, then a 1-1 at already relegated Wolverhampton Wanderers. United arrived having sealed a Champions League return with victories over Chelsea, Brentford and Liverpool across the last fortnight.

On Saturday they became the first team to shut out the Red Devils under Michael Carrick’s interim reign, roared on by more than 47,000. It could have been even better as Chemsdine Talbi, Noah Sadiki, Lutsharel Geertruida and Brian Brobbey all went close to a decisive goal.

The result has arguably ended Sunderland’s hopes of European football next season.

The predicted table puts Everton 9th on 52.49 points, Chelsea 10th on 52.14 and Fulham 11th on 50.93, with Sunderland 12th on 50.23. Arsenal are projected to finish top on 82.42, ahead of Manchester City on 79.80 and Manchester United on 67.96.
