Sunderland are weighing defensive additions for a Premier League and Europa League campaign, with Toulouse left-back Dayann Methalie linked, Timothée Pembélé the subject of exit reports, and Dennis Cirkin attracting interest.
The Black Cats have already signed Thomas Meunier on a free, giving the Belgium international a two-year deal to bolster Régis Le Bris’ defence.
According to Football Insider, Sunderland have identified Methalie, 20, as a target for the left side. There is no indication an offer has been made or that talks are advanced.
Methalie made 28 Ligue 1 appearances last season, scoring two and assisting one for Toulouse. Le Bris and director of football Florent Ghisolfi have closely tracked the French market since arriving.
Linked with Newcastle United in January, Methalie said: “It is flattering. For now, I have to keep doing what I’m doing,” speaking to Telefoot at the time.
L’Équipe claims Pembélé is set to rejoin Le Havre after spending the second half of last season there on loan. The 23-year-old arrived from Paris Saint-Germain in 2023 and struggled for consistent minutes. Comfortable at right-back or wing-back, a permanent switch would also help streamline Sunderland’s squad.
Former left-back Dennis Cirkin left at the end of his contract and is drawing interest. Schalke are monitoring his situation. He joined in 2021 and helped the rise from League One to the Premier League.
