El Pais reports that Sunderland’s €25m January bid for Osasuna winger Victor Munoz was unsuccessful after the Real Madrid academy graduate turned down a move to Wearside. It adds that any exit would require meeting a €40m release clause, with Madrid retaining a 50% resale clause in last summer’s deal.

The 22-year-old’s profile has surged after a maiden call-up to Spain’s senior squad. He scored on debut in Friday’s friendly win over Serbia.

He will hope to impress head coach Luis de la Fuente again when the reigning European champions face Egypt on Tuesday night.

A strong display could put him in contention for this summer’s World Cup finals in North America, as La Roja chase a first global title since 2010.

Any club moving for Munoz would need to account for those terms to prise him from Osasuna.
