Jenson Seelt looks set to head back to Wearside this summer, with Kicker reporting VfL Wolfsburg are unlikely to trigger their option to buy the Sunderland loanee. The 22-year-old centre-back has made 10 appearances in Germany, a stop-start spell affected by injury and illness.

Seelt is currently sidelined by a knee problem and has not featured since the start of the year. Sunderland Echo understands the Black Cats have no plans to revive their pursuit of Jhon Lucumí, whose Bologna contract runs until 2027.

Lucumí is reported to be moving closer to a Bologna exit after turning down two further extension offers, having been strongly linked with Sunderland in the summer before a sale was ruled out. He has also been mentioned as a short-term option for injury-hit Manchester City.

SportsBoom claims Sunderland are monitoring Manchester United left-back Tyrell Malacia, whose deal is said to be nearing expiry. The 26-year-old has played just one senior appearance totalling two minutes this season and is keen for regular football, with a free transfer touted. That outlet’s Coventry-Romaine Mundle claim was publicly dismissed by club figures including Régis Le Bris.

If Wolfsburg stick with their stance, Seelt would return for pre-season on Wearside. Links to Malacia should be treated with caution for now and, with recruitment priorities shifted, any renewed Sunderland move for Lucumí currently appears unlikely.
