Sunderland have activated Simon Moore’s one-year option to keep the goalkeeper at the club next season, Sunderland Echo understands.
The 36-year-old’s deal had been due to expire on 30 June 2026, with an option for a further 12 months. That clause is understood to have been triggered some time ago, leaving Moore set to remain on Wearside for at least another year.
Moore joined in June 2024 on a two-year contract when the club were in the Championship. He made his first league appearance against Oxford United in October 2024 after Anthony Patterson was sidelined.
He played four league matches before Patterson’s return and added two outings in the cups. He has not featured this season, though his influence has been repeatedly noted within the camp.
The veteran has been a steadying figure alongside 23-year-old Robin Roefs and 22-year-old Melker Ellborg in a youthful goalkeeping group. He is also progressing through his coaching badges with support at the Academy of Light.
Roefs has credited Moore with helping him settle after his move from the Netherlands. Meanwhile Luke O’Nien has hailed the keeper as an unsung hero of recent success, using him as a reference point while recovering from a shoulder injury sustained in the play-off final win over Sheffield United.
O’Nien pointed to Moore’s four appearances last season, saying they included three clean sheets and only two goals conceded, and that his contribution was central to the promotion push.
