Sunderland trigger Simon Moore extension after Robin Roefs and Luke O’Nien praise | OneFootball

Simon Moore will remain at Sunderland next season after the club triggered a one-year option in the goalkeeper’s contract.

Sunderland Echo understands the clause was activated some time ago, extending an agreement that had been due to expire on 30 June 2026.

Moore, 36, joined in June 2024 on a two-year contract when the Black Cats were still in the Championship. He debuted in October 2024 against Oxford United during Anthony Patterson’s injury, making four league appearances and two in the cups before Patterson returned.

He has not featured this season, but is regarded as a key figure in a young goalkeeping group that includes 23-year-old Robin Roefs and 22-year-old Melker Ellborg. Moore is also progressing through his coaching badges with support at the Academy of Light.

Roefs has repeatedly credited Moore for helping him settle after arriving from the Netherlands, saying the senior keeper made him feel at home.

Luke O’Nien has described Moore as the unsung hero of Sunderland’s recent success, using him as an example while recovering from a shoulder injury sustained in the play-off final win over Sheffield United. He has kept a Moore shirt in his locker and highlighted that Moore played around four games in last season’s promotion, with three clean sheets and two conceded.
