High-flying Sunderland host league leaders Arsenal today, aiming to continue their best start to a top-flight season since 1999.
The newly-promoted Black Cats have turned the Stadium of Light into a fortress. Indeed, they remain unbeaten at home this season (W3, D2). Consequently, this match provides a huge test of their European credentials.
However, they face a dreadful record against teams at the top of the table. In fact, Sunderland are winless in their last 23 Premier League games against sides starting the day in the top four. Breaking that long-standing run will require a massive performance.
Sunderland manager Régis Le Bris has confirmed he will be without defender Omar Alderete for Saturday’s clash with Arsenal. The centre-back, who has already missed the last two games, is still observing strict concussion protocols and will not be risked, though Le Bris hopes he can gain minutes with his national team. He is joined on the sidelines by midfielder Habib Diarra, who remains a long-term absentee as he continues his recovery from a significant injury and will not be rushed back.
The match at the Stadium of Light will also be a significant occasion for Sunderland’s captain, Granit Xhaka. The Swiss midfielder is set to line up against his former club, Arsenal, for the first time since his high-profile summer departure from the Emirates.
Sunderland predicted XI: Roefs; Hume, Mukiele, Ballard, Geertruida, Reinildo; Xhaka, Sadiki; Traore, Isidor, Le Fee
