Sunderland Women have entered a new era after the WSL approved Bay Collective’s takeover of the club, according to Sunderland Echo.

The US multi-club group, backed by investment firm Sixth Street, has taken a majority shareholding and day-to-day control. Sunderland retains a minority stake, so the team will keep the club name and remain at the Academy of Light.

Both parties plan to work closely to drive growth, and Bay Collective chief executive Kay Cossington said they feel they have found the right partners.

Cossington outlined a sustainable model with steady investment over years, while setting an intention to restore Sunderland Women to former heights.

She believes the club could compete with the world’s best again, noting it had been at that level before.

Referencing her time as an international coach, she highlighted the many players developed on Wearside, including Lucy Bronze, Jill Scott, Steph Houghton, Lucy Staniforth and Debbie Stokes, and said it is time to bring those days back.
