Sunderland head into a pivotal summer with Europa League football on the horizon, and their 2025/26 net spend placing them sixth in the Premier League.
According to Sunderland Echo, the Black Cats recorded a £135m net transfer loss across 2025/26, the sixth-highest in the division. Arsenal led with £243m, followed by Liverpool £227m, Manchester City £168m, Tottenham Hotspur £158m and Manchester United £149m.
Other notable deficits included Everton £101m, Nottingham Forest £97m and Newcastle United £89m. Four clubs posted profits, Bournemouth £112m, Wolverhampton Wanderers £70m, Brighton and Hove Albion £55m and Brentford £44m.
Last summer’s revamp followed the departures of Jobe Bellingham and Tommy Watson after the Championship play-off final win over Sheffield United. That Wembley success triggered a permanent deal for Enzo Le Fee that set a club record, and the figure was surpassed within weeks when Habib Diarra joined from Strasbourg.
Granit Xhaka, Omar Alderete and Dutch trio Robin Roefs, Lutsharel Geertruida and Brian Brobbey all signed before the window closed. January additions included goalkeeper Melker Ellborg, Anderlecht winger Nilson Angulo and Ivorian prospect Jocelin Ta Bi.
The overhaul delivered a seventh place finish and a Europa League berth. With the window opening on Monday, activity may be calmer than last year, but European commitments mean Sunderland still need to deepen the squad.
