Sunderland’s most valuable XI puts Robin Roefs in goal and Habib Diarra at the heart of midfield, reflecting a radically rebuilt squad that has fuelled an unexpected bid for Europe in their first season back in the Premier League.
According to Sunderland Echo, promotion via a Wembley win over Sheffield United triggered a £20m clause that made loan signing Enzo Le Fee a permanent Roma capture. Sunderland then saw off Leeds United to seal a reported £30m deal for Strasbourg midfielder Habib Diarra.
Experience arrived with former Arsenal captain Granit Xhaka, while defensive steel came with Omar Alderete, Nordi Mukiele and Reinildo Mandava. Netherlands goalkeeper Robin Roefs has looked a shrewd piece of business and Brian Brobbey has already earned cult status for his strength and tenacity.
By value, the XI is: GK Robin Roefs €25.00m, RB Trai Hume €22.00m, CB Dan Ballard €20.00m, CB Omar Alderete €15.00m, LB Dennis Cirkin €8.00m. Midfield and attack: Habib Diarra €32.00m, Noah Sadiki €30.00m, Chris Rigg €25.00m, Chemsdine Talbi €25.00m, Enzo Le Fee €25.00m, Brian Brobbey €25.00m.
Head coach Regis Le Bris believes it has probably been unexpected to reach 40 points so early, although injuries and fatigue are taking a toll. He stresses togetherness and the team’s identity, saying this spell can reinforce pillars and create conditions for better days when the squad is fresher.
