Opta projects Sunderland to finish 16th in the Premier League on 46.02 points, with Arsenal forecast to top the final table.
The Black Cats have four points from three matches after a hard-earned draw at Brentford on Saturday.
They opened with a 2-1 defeat at newly-promoted Ipswich Town, then secured their first win when substitute Wilson Isidor struck the only goal against Fulham.
At Brentford, they trailed as the hour neared when midfielder Vitaly Janlet scored for the hosts. A foul on Isidor led to a penalty with eight minutes remaining, Enzo Le Fee converted to earn a point in the capital.
Regis Le Bris’ side now face three home games in 10 days, a Carabao Cup tie with Hull City and a historic Europa League meeting with AZ Alkmaar either side of a league clash with champions Arsenal.
The projection places Arsenal on 76.35 points, ahead of Manchester City on 71.61 and Liverpool on 61.46. Newcastle United are sixth on 54.77, Tottenham Hotspur 13th on 46.75 and Hull City 14th on 46.55.
In the projection, Sunderland are 16th, with Nottingham Forest 17th on 44.64, while the bottom three are Ipswich Town on 42.03, Coventry City on 40.52 and Fulham on 38.92.
