Mamadou Doumbia equalised in the 79th minute with a left-footed finish, as Watford drew 1-1 with Portsmouth. The 19-year-old came on at half time and changed the tempo for the hosts.

Before the goal, Doumbia slipped Marc Bola in on the left to force a save, signalling his threat between the lines and giving the Hornets a platform to build pressure.

He then arrived in the middle to convert from Luca Kjerrumgaard's pass (79.), a clinical, one-touch finish that rewarded Watford's sustained second half pressure.

Doumbia finished with one attempt, one on target and one key pass, plus one successful dribble and three successful final third passes from 19 touches. That economy underlined how his movement gave the Hornets a penalty box focal point.

With Watford swinging in 27 crosses, his presence offered a direct target and his combinations kept Portsmouth's back line occupied, ensuring the Hornets controlled territory late on.

The Hornets rise from eighth to seventh. They visit Blackburn next. Portsmouth climb from 22nd to 21st and host Southampton next.
