Ibrahima Konate’s departure from Liverpool continues to generate debate, but one player who appears delighted by the defender’s next career move is Kylian Mbappe.
The France international centre-back is expected to begin a new chapter with Real Madrid after leaving Liverpool as a free agent. While supporters at Anfield remain disappointed to see a key defender move on, there is little doubt that Konate arrives in Spain with the backing of some of the biggest names in world football.
Real Madrid striker Mbappe has spoken warmly about his international teammate and outlined why he believes Konate can become a major success at the Bernabeu.
Liverpool had previously appeared confident of retaining the defender. Konate publicly indicated earlier in the year that a new deal was close, only for negotiations to break down in the months that followed. With no agreement reached, the Frenchman ultimately opted to leave Merseyside and pursue a fresh challenge.
His next destination looks set to be Real Madrid, where Mbappe is already established as one of the club’s leading figures.

Few players understand Konate’s qualities better than Mbappe, having shared a dressing room with him for France on numerous occasions.
Speaking to L’Equipe, Mbappe offered a detailed assessment of what makes Konate such a difficult defender to face.
“He’s a very aggressive defender, in the best sense of the word.”
Mbappe continued by highlighting the physical and psychological aspects of Konate’s game.
“Never a bad move, he’s tough in his marking, he wants his opponent to feel like they’re going to have a rough night.”
Those comments will resonate with Liverpool supporters who watched Konate establish himself as one of the Premier League’s most imposing defenders. His blend of pace, power and recovery speed made him a key component of Liverpool’s back line during his time at Anfield.
Mbappe also praised the tactical intelligence that often goes unnoticed.
“I love defenders like him on my team, with grit, who are tactically flexible, because they’re capable of going after their marker as well as holding their own in one-on-one situations, winning duels, and being tactically disciplined.”
Such praise from a player of Mbappe’s stature offers a strong indication of how highly Konate is regarded within the French national setup.
For Liverpool, Konate’s exit creates an obvious challenge.
Replacing a defender entering his prime years is rarely straightforward. While Liverpool have successfully refreshed their squad under Arne Slot, losing a player with Konate’s profile inevitably places greater emphasis on recruitment decisions.
The defender arrived from RB Leipzig with huge potential and developed into a regular starter capable of competing at the highest level. Injuries occasionally disrupted his progress, but his performances in major matches frequently demonstrated his value.
Liverpool’s recruitment team must now identify a successor capable of matching both his physical attributes and his ability to defend aggressively in high spaces.
Konate’s departure also removes an experienced international defender from the dressing room, further increasing the importance of any replacement.
While Mbappe has no doubts about Konate’s ability, former Liverpool winger John Barnes believes success at Real Madrid is never guaranteed.
Barnes pointed to the challenges some players have faced after leaving Liverpool and adapting to a different environment.
Speaking about Konate’s move, Barnes suggested that talent alone does not always guarantee success.
“Nothing surprises me in football.”
He added: “A new environment could suit him and I’m sure he’ll do well.”
However, Barnes also noted that adapting to Real Madrid can be complicated, regardless of previous achievements elsewhere.
His warning serves as a reminder that expectations at the Spanish giants are unique. Every signing arrives under intense scrutiny and immediate pressure to deliver trophies.
For Konate, though, the endorsement of Mbappe will undoubtedly strengthen confidence ahead of the next stage of his career. Liverpool may have lost an important defender, but Real Madrid appear ready to welcome a player whose qualities are admired by one of football’s biggest stars.
