Blackburn Rovers clash with Ipswich Town last weekend was abandoned after 80 minutes
A new precedent has emerged in the EFL’s decision making process regarding Ipswich Town and Blackburn Rovers after their league meeting was abandoned last weekend.
According to Alan Nixon, the 1-0 win for Leyton Orient over Lincoln City from last year, which was abandoned after 82 minutes.
The referee ended the clash at Ewood Park after 80 minutes due to the heavy rain, leaving it up in the air as to how the result will be determined.
No decision has yet been made over how the game will be finished, with three main options on the table for the EFL.
The game could be restarted from the 80th minute with the score still 1-0 in favour of the hosts, or it could be replayed entirely, while the result may just be called as it was when the game was abandoned.
It was previously reported that both clubs had submitted their proposal for how the game’s result should be determined.
It was claimed that the EFL were stuck in a bind with no clear path forward for how to come to a decision.
However, it is now understood that this meeting between Leyton Orient and Lincoln City could form the basis of a precedent that decides Blackburn and Ipswich’s dilemma.
The League One clash was abandoned after 82 minutes when a fan in the stands fell ill, with the EFL opting to replay the game in full.
Blackburn are believed to be pushing for either the final 10 minutes to be played, or for them to be awarded all three points, but this precedent could prove a setback in that pursuit.
Ipswich are hoping for a full replay, which would reset the score to 0-0, while also reinstating Jacob Greaves into the fixture after he had been sent off.
Restarting the game in full seems the likeliest outcome at this stage if a precedent has been found by the EFL.
Luton Town also had a game against Bournemouth restarted in full after it was abandoned during the 2022/23 campaign, when they were competing in the Premier League.
That would hurt Blackburn, as they will now have to play to earn a 1-0 scoreline again.
Ipswich will be offered a reprieve, which could prove quite crucial for them in their bid to climb the table and fight for promotion to the Premier League this season.
